In an article published on abcnews.go.com, attorney Richard Portale accused police of “rushing to judgment” in their arrest of his client, Angelika Graswald. Graswald was arrested in connection to the death of her fiancé, Vincent Viafore.

According to Graswald, she and Viafore were kayaking on the Hudson River on April 19th when strong winds and rough water caused Viafore’s kayak to overturn. Graswald called 911 and attempted to help Viafore, but fell out of her own kayak and had to be rescued and treated for hypothermia. Police, however, allege that Graswald intentionally sabotaged her fiancé’s kayak and waited more than 10 minutes after his disappearance before calling 911.

Portale argues that Graswald was being wrongly held before the results of her indictment were revealed and Graswald was arraigned. Since that time, she has been charged with second degree murder and second degree manslaughter, and entered a plea of “not guilty.”
